RRB JE CBT 2 Syllabus

The RRB JE CBT 2 (Computer Based Test Stage 2) is the main examination of the RRB Junior Engineer 2027 recruitment. Only candidates who qualify CBT 1 are eligible to appear. The CBT 2 score is the sole basis for the final merit list and determines selection for Document Verification and subsequent appointment. CBT 2 consists of 150 questions carrying 150 marks in 120 minutes.

CBT 2 has two distinct components: a 100-question engineering discipline-specific section that tests deep technical knowledge in the candidate's applied discipline (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, IT, etc.), and a 50-question common technical section covering Physics and Chemistry, Computer Applications basics, Environmental Science, and Engineering Drawing (for applicable posts).

•        Scales: representative fraction, plain scale, diagonal scale, scale of chords

•        Orthographic Projection: first angle (European) and third angle (American) projection; drawing top, front, and side views

•        Sectional Views: full section, half section, partial section, revolved section; section lines and conventions

CBT 2 Preparation Strategy


1. Engineering Discipline Section is the Priority

With 100 out of 150 marks from engineering discipline questions, the technical section determines your JE rank. Revise systematically from your Diploma or Degree textbooks, solve subject-specific previous years' papers (including GATE, ESE, SSC JE, and previous RRB JE papers for your discipline), and ensure strong coverage of all major topic areas.


2. Allocate Time Proportionally in the Examination

With 150 questions in 120 minutes, you have an average of 48 seconds per question. Allocate approximately 70 minutes to the engineering discipline section and 50 minutes to the common technical section. Do not allow any single difficult question to consume disproportionate time.


3. Engineering Drawing Preparation

Engineering Drawing questions test visual-spatial reasoning and knowledge of technical drawing conventions. Practise orthographic projections, isometric drawings, and development of surfaces from standard textbooks. These questions can be completed quickly with practice and offer reliable marks.

Q1. Is the CBT 2 syllabus the same for all engineering disciplines?

The 50-mark common technical section is the same for all JE disciplines. The 100-mark engineering discipline section is entirely different for each discipline.


Q2. Is there an Engineering Drawing component for all JE posts?

Engineering Drawing is applicable primarily to Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical JE posts. For IT and some other posts, this component may be replaced by additional questions in Computer Applications or domain-specific subjects. Check the official notification for post-specific CBT 2 pattern.


Q3. What is the recommended resource for the engineering discipline section?

Study from standard textbooks used in your Diploma or Degree course (e.g., Ramamrutham for Civil Structures, Nagrath and Kothari for Electrical Machines, Cengel for Thermodynamics). Supplement with SSC JE and previous RRB JE question banks for practice.
