RRB NTPC Syllabus
The RRB NTPC (Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories) recruitment is one of the largest and most sought-after government job examinations in India, conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. The NTPC examination recruits candidates for a wide range of non-technical clerical, commercial, and supervisory posts across the Indian Railways network. With lakhs of vacancies notified in each recruitment cycle and an applicant pool running into millions, the RRB NTPC examination is among the most competitive recruitment processes in the country.
The RRB NTPC 2027 recruitment cycle follows a three-stage selection process: a Computer Based Test Stage 1 (CBT 1) which acts as a preliminary screening examination, a Computer Based Test Stage 2 (CBT 2) which is the main examination, and a final stage comprising Typing Skill Test / Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) as applicable to specific posts, followed by Document Verification and a Medical Examination.
The RRB NTPC syllabus covers four core subject areas across both stages: Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Science. The difficulty level increases from CBT 1 to CBT 2, and the number of questions varies by stage and post category. Thorough preparation across all four subjects is essential for success in this examination.

Preparation Tips for RRB NTPC 2027
1. Start with a Complete Syllabus Review
Before beginning preparation, study the full RRB NTPC syllabus and exam pattern thoroughly. Understand the exact number of questions per section, the negative marking scheme, and the difference between CBT 1 and CBT 2 in terms of difficulty and question distribution. Map the syllabus to your current knowledge level and identify your strongest and weakest subjects early.
2. Build a Subject-Wise Study Plan
Allocate study time proportional to both the number of questions per subject and your individual preparation gaps. General Awareness carries the highest weightage (40 marks in CBT 1, 50 marks in CBT 2) and requires daily consistent effort through current affairs revision. Mathematics and Reasoning require daily practice. Create a weekly study schedule that covers all three subjects without allowing any to be neglected.
3. Focus on High-Frequency Topics First
Analysis of previous RRB NTPC papers reveals that certain topics appear consistently in every cycle: Percentage, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Ratio and Proportion in Mathematics; Series Completion, Analogies, Coding-Decoding, Syllogism in Reasoning; and Indian History, Indian Polity, Indian Railways GK, and Current Affairs in General Awareness. Master these high-frequency topics before moving to lower-frequency ones.
4. Revise Current Affairs Daily
General Awareness is the section where most candidates lose marks unnecessarily. Spend at least 20 to 30 minutes every day reading current affairs from reliable sources. Focus on national and international news, government schemes, sports achievements, awards, appointments, and science and technology developments. Revise the last 12 to 18 months of current affairs before the examination.
5. Practise Previous Years' Papers Under Timed Conditions
Solving previous years' RRB NTPC question papers under strict 90-minute timed conditions is among the most effective preparation strategies. This develops speed, accuracy, and exam temperament simultaneously. After each mock test, conduct a detailed error analysis: identify which questions you got wrong, why you got them wrong, and what the correct approach should have been.
6. Master the Negative Marking Strategy
With a 1/3 negative marking penalty, random guessing is costly. Develop a disciplined strategy for uncertain questions: attempt those where you can eliminate at least two options, and skip those where you have no reasonable basis for any answer. Your accuracy rate across attempted questions is more important than the total number of questions attempted.
