RRB Syllabus

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) are 21 regional boards functioning under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India, responsible for recruiting candidates to thousands of posts across the Indian Railways network every year. Indian Railways is one of the largest employers in the world, and the RRB recruitment examinations are among the most competitive and widely attempted government job examinations in India.

RRB recruits candidates for posts across a wide spectrum of functions: non-technical clerical and supervisory roles (NTPC), technical engineering positions (JE, Technician), operational roles (ALP, Group D), security services (RPF), healthcare (Paramedical), and administrative and isolated category posts (MI). Each category has its own distinct examination pattern, syllabus, selection process, and eligibility criteria.

This page serves as the master syllabus hub for all RRB 2027 recruitment examinations. Use the All Examinations table below to navigate directly to any individual examination's syllabus page, or scroll through the overview sections for a comparative understanding of all RRB examinations.

How to Choose the Right RRB Examination

For 10th Pass Candidates

Candidates who have passed the 10th standard (SSLC/Matriculation) are eligible for RRB Group D, RRB ALP (with ITI), and RRB RPF Constable. Group D and ALP are the largest recruitment drives in terms of vacancy count and are the most accessible entry points into Indian Railways for 10th pass candidates.

For 12th Pass Candidates

Candidates with 12th pass (Higher Secondary) qualification are eligible for NTPC Under-Graduate Level Posts and RPF Constable. The NTPC UG posts include Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Junior Clerk cum Typist, and others, and offer the opportunity to enter clerical and commercial departments of Indian Railways.

For Graduate Candidates

Degree holders are eligible for NTPC Graduate Level Posts, RPF Sub-Inspector, and depending on their degree subject, RRB JE (engineering graduates), RRB MI (various departments), and RRB Paramedical (health graduates). Graduate candidates have the widest range of RRB examination options available to them.

For Engineering Diploma and Degree Holders

Engineering candidates with a Diploma or Degree in Engineering are specifically eligible for RRB JE (Junior Engineer) and RRB Technician posts. The JE examination is among the most competitive technical government job examinations and is particularly sought after by engineering diploma holders.

General Preparation Strategy for RRB Examinations

1. Identify Your Target Examination First

Before beginning preparation, identify which RRB examination aligns with your qualification, preferred department, and career goals. The syllabus, difficulty level, and selection process vary significantly across examinations. Candidates who prepare with a clear target examination in mind use their study time far more efficiently than those who prepare generically.

2. Common Subjects Across Multiple Examinations

Several subjects appear across multiple RRB examinations: Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness are tested in NTPC, Group D, RPF Constable, RPF SI, and Technician examinations. Candidates who have prepared for one RRB examination have a strong preparation base for others, particularly in these common subjects.

3. Current Affairs is Non-Negotiable

All RRB examinations include a General Awareness section that tests current affairs from the preceding 12 to 18 months. Daily current affairs revision from a reliable source is essential regardless of which specific examination a candidate is targeting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Can a candidate apply to multiple RRB examinations simultaneously?

Yes, a candidate can apply to multiple RRB examinations in the same cycle if they meet the eligibility criteria for each. For example, an engineering graduate can simultaneously apply for NTPC Graduate Level Posts, RRB JE, and RRB Technician if their qualification meets the requirements of each examination.

Q2. Are all RRB examinations conducted simultaneously?

No. Different RRB examinations have separate recruitment calendars. Notifications, application windows, and examination dates for each category are announced independently. Candidates should monitor indianrailways.gov.in and individual RRB websites regularly for announcements.

Q3. Is negative marking applicable in all RRB examinations?

Yes. A negative marking of 1/3 mark per wrong answer applies in the CBT stages of all major RRB examinations including NTPC, Group D, JE, ALP, RPF, Technician, MI, and Paramedical. Unattempted questions do not attract negative marks.

Q4. Is there a common syllabus for all RRB examinations?

There is no single common syllabus, but several subjects overlap across examinations. Mathematics, Reasoning, and General Awareness are tested across most RRB examinations. Technical examinations (JE, Technician, ALP) additionally test engineering or trade-specific knowledge in CBT 2.
