ISC Class 12 Elective English Exam Pattern 2026-27
The Elective English examination has a written theory paper set and marked by CISCE, and an internal assessment component completed in school. Our specimen papers follow the same structure.
Component | Marks | Duration |
Paper I: Theory (written paper) | 80 | 3 hours |
Paper II: Project Work (one written assignment of 1,000 to 1,500 words) | 20 | Completed in school: 10 marks from the teacher, 10 from a Visiting Examiner |
How the Question Paper Is Structured
Elective English is a literature paper on the prescribed Class XII texts, separate from the compulsory English papers. Candidates study one of two novels (The Book Thief or The Namesake), one of two plays (An Enemy of the People or Tughlaq) and the prescribed poems from the anthology Fireflies. Section A (10 marks) has one-mark multiple-choice questions on the chosen novel, the chosen play and the poems. Section B (10 marks) has five short answers of 2 marks: two on the novel, two on the play and one on poetry. Section C (60 marks) has three long answers of 20 marks, one each on the novel, the play and poetry; each offers a choice between a single 20-mark question and two 10-mark questions.
Always read the instructions printed at the top of the specimen paper. They state which questions are compulsory, how many questions to attempt from each section and whether any special materials are allowed. We word them to match the board paper.

Why You Should Solve the Elective English Specimen Paper
• Understand the paper design: you see the order of sections, question types and choices before the exam day.
• Learn how marks are distributed: the marks in brackets tell you how long and detailed each answer should be.
• Practise competency-based questions: CISCE papers increasingly test application and reasoning, and our paper carries questions in the same style.
• Build exam-day timing: one full attempt under timed conditions shows where you lose minutes.
• Find weak areas early: questions you cannot answer point directly to the topics you need to revise.
• Understand marking: the answer key supplied with the paper shows how marks are credited for steps, keywords and diagrams.
How to Use the ISC Class 12 Elective English Specimen Paper Effectively
1. Complete at least one full revision of the Elective English syllabus before your first attempt.
2. Download the first paper and print it, so the attempt feels like the real exam.
3. Sit the paper in one go for 3 hours, plus 15 minutes of reading time, with no notes or phone.
4. Evaluate your answers against the answer key supplied with the paper.
5. List every mistake by type: concept gaps, careless errors, presentation and time management.
6. Revise the weak topics, then attempt the second paper after two to three weeks.
7. Follow up with previous years' question papers and full-length practice papers for wider coverage.
Suggested Time Plan for the Paper
Stage | Suggested time | What to do |
Reading time | 15 minutes | Read every question, mark your choices and plan the order of attempt. |
Short and objective questions | 60 minutes | Answer quickly and accurately; do not overwrite answers. |
Long and choice-based questions | 105 minutes | Attempt your strongest questions first, with full working, diagrams or examples. |
Final review | 15 minutes | Check units, labels, question numbers and any skipped sub-parts. |
This works out to roughly 2.25 minutes per mark. Adjust the split to match the section marks printed on the specimen paper.
Expert Tips to Score High in ISC Class 12 Elective English
• Decide before the exam which novel and which play you will answer on, and use the same texts in every section.
• Build a one-page sheet for each character with three or four precise incidents that show them at work.
• Answer the question set in your first sentence, then give one paragraph to each point you make.
• Learn short key phrases from the poems for close reference, and know each poem's form, speaker and turning point.
• In a 20-mark answer weigh the evidence and give your own judgment, since the board rewards a personal response.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
• Retelling the plot in place of an argument that answers the question.
• Writing on both novels or both plays and losing time on a text that will not be marked.
• Naming literary devices in a poem without explaining their effect.
• Spending too long on Sections A and B and leaving the third long answer unfinished.
