ISC Class 12 Modern English Specimen Paper 2026-27

The ISC Class 12 Modern English specimen papers are full-length practice papers written by the Future Topper team on the paper pattern set by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), for students appearing in the ISC board examination. They follow the board's design for the Modern English paper: the sections, the type of questions, the internal choices and the marks carried by each question.

Modern English (891) is a new ISC subject. Its Class XI course began in 2025-26, so the 2027 examination is its first board examination. It is a separate subject from ISC English, with its own prescribed texts: Pygmalion (Acts III to V), the short story collection Perspectives and the poetry collection Reflections. These specimen papers are for its literature paper, Literature in English (Prescribed Texts).

For Class 12 students, solving the Modern English specimen papers is one of the most reliable ways to understand the board's expectations before the final exam. On this page you can download both ISC Class 12 Modern English specimen paper PDFs, check the latest paper pattern, see which topics the paper tests and follow a practical plan to use the paper for maximum marks.

ISC Class 12 Modern English Exam Pattern 2026-27

The Modern English examination has a written theory paper set and marked by CISCE, and an internal assessment component completed in school. Our specimen papers follow the same structure.

Duration

3 hours

Literature in English: Project Work (one written assignment of 1,000 to 1,500 words)

Completed in school: 10 marks from the teacher, 10 from a Visiting Examiner

How the Question Paper Is Structured

The Modern English literature paper, Literature in English (Prescribed Texts), tests Shaw's Pygmalion (Acts III, IV and V), five short stories from Perspectives and five poems from Reflections. Section A (20 marks) has ten one-mark multiple-choice questions on all three texts, followed by six short-answer questions of 2 marks, of which candidates answer any five in 40 to 50 words each. Section B (60 marks) has one 20-mark question each on the drama, the short stories and the poems: two compulsory 5-mark parts answered in a paragraph of 80 to 100 words, and a 10-mark part of 150 to 200 words with a choice of two questions. All five questions are compulsory. Project work, assessed in school, carries the remaining 20 marks.

Always read the instructions printed at the top of the specimen paper. They state which questions are compulsory, how many questions to attempt from each section and whether any special materials are allowed. We word them to match the board paper.

Topics Covered in the ISC Class 12 Modern English Specimen Paper

Why You Should Solve the Modern English Specimen Paper

•       Understand the paper design: you see the order of sections, question types and choices before the exam day.

•       Learn how marks are distributed: the marks in brackets tell you how long and detailed each answer should be.

•       Practise competency-based questions: CISCE papers increasingly test application and reasoning, and our paper carries questions in the same style.

•       Build exam-day timing: one full attempt under timed conditions shows where you lose minutes.

•       Find weak areas early: questions you cannot answer point directly to the topics you need to revise.

•       Understand marking: the answer key supplied with the paper shows how marks are credited for steps, keywords and diagrams.

How to Use the ISC Class 12 Modern English Specimen Paper Effectively

1.     Complete at least one full revision of the Modern English syllabus before your first attempt.

2.     Download the first paper and print it, so the attempt feels like the real exam.

3.     Sit the paper in one go for 3 hours, plus 15 minutes of reading time, with no notes or phone.

4.     Evaluate your answers against the answer key supplied with the paper.

5.     List every mistake by type: concept gaps, careless errors, presentation and time management.

6.     Revise the weak topics, then attempt the second paper after two to three weeks.

7.     Follow up with the CISCE specimen paper and full-length practice papers for wider coverage.

Expert Tips to Score High in ISC Class 12 Modern English

•       Know Acts III, IV and V of Pygmalion scene by scene, with two or three precise incidents for each character.

•       For every story, be ready to explain its ending and the point of view from which it is told.

•       For every poem, know the speaker, the form, two key images and the turn or climax.

•       Answer the 5-mark parts in one tight paragraph that opens with a direct answer to the question.

•       In the 10-mark answer, argue a case and support each point with a specific moment from the text.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

•       Retelling the plot of Pygmalion or a story instead of answering the question set.

•       Writing far beyond 50 words in Question 2 and running short of time for Section B.

•       Naming poetic devices without explaining their effect in the poem.

•       Relying on the film or musical of Pygmalion, whose ending and scenes differ from Shaw's play.

FAQs on ISC Class 12 Modern English Specimen Paper 2026-27

Where can I download the ISC Class 12 Modern English specimen paper 2026-27?

You can download it from the table on this page. Every paper is written by Future Topper and comes with an answer key.

Is the Modern English specimen paper based on the latest syllabus?

Yes. Both papers follow the syllabus and pattern prescribed for the current ISC examination.

How many marks is the ISC Class 12 Modern English theory paper?

The theory paper carries 80 marks and is 3 hours long. Internal assessment carries 20 marks. Candidates also get 15 minutes of reading time.

Is Modern English the same as ISC English?

No. Modern English (891) is a separate ISC subject with its own syllabus and prescribed texts, introduced with the Class XI course in 2025-26. ISC English sets different literature texts, so check which subject your school has registered you for before you practise.

Which acts of Pygmalion are prescribed for Class 12?

Acts III, IV and V. Acts I and II are studied in Class 11, but you should know their events well enough to understand references to them.

Does the specimen paper include answers?

Yes. Every Future Topper specimen paper comes with a full answer key, so you can mark your own attempt and see where the marks were lost.

Will the board exam have the same questions as the specimen paper?

No. Our papers show the format, question types and difficulty level, not the actual questions. Use it to understand the pattern, then practise widely.

When should I start solving the Modern English specimen paper?

Attempt it once you have revised the full syllabus, ideally by December. Solving it too early can leave many questions unattempted and give a misleading picture of your preparation.
