RRB Group D General Science Syllabus

General Science in the RRB Group D CBT covers 25 questions worth 25 marks. As per the official notification, all questions in this section are set at the Class 10 (CBSE) standard. The section is divided into three areas: Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences (Biology). Questions test both theoretical understanding and the application of concepts to real-life situations.

Topic-wise Breakdown and What to Study

Physics: Key Areas to Focus On

Newton's three laws of motion are a favourite topic and appear in the form of both direct definition questions and applied numerical problems. Work-Energy Theorem, the law of conservation of energy, and the concept of power are also important. Electricity and Magnetism questions frequently test Ohm's law, series and parallel circuits, and the relationship between magnetic fields and electric current. For Light, ensure you know the mirror and lens formulas and understand concepts like total internal reflection.

Chemistry: Key Areas to Focus On

Chemical Reactions and Equations is the most important chapter for this section. Know how to balance equations and identify types of reactions such as combination, decomposition, displacement, and redox reactions. Acids, Bases and Salts questions test pH values, neutralisation, and the properties of common acids (HCl, H2SO4) and bases (NaOH, Ca(OH)2). The Periodic Table topic covers trends in reactivity, valence electrons, and the positions of metals and non-metals.

Life Sciences: Key Areas to Focus On

Cell Biology questions typically ask about the difference between plant and animal cells, and the functions of organelles like the mitochondria, nucleus, and chloroplast. Nutrition and Digestion covers the role of enzymes and the parts of the digestive system. For Reproduction, understand both sexual and asexual reproduction in plants and animals. Ecosystem questions often focus on food chains, food webs, and the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers.

General Science Preparation Tips

•        Study from NCERT Class 9 and Class 10 textbooks as the exam questions are directly based on these books.

•        Make a formula sheet for Physics covering equations for motion, electricity, and optics, and revise it daily.

•        Create a chemical reactions table for Chemistry listing reactants, products, and the type of reaction so that you can recall them quickly.

•        Focus on understanding concepts in Biology rather than memorising, because questions often test application of biological principles.

•        Solve at least 50 previous year General Science questions to identify which topics appear most frequently in the RRB Group D exam.
