RRB Group D Mathematics Syllabus

Mathematics is one of the four subjects in the RRB Group D Computer-Based Test (CBT). The section carries 25 questions worth 25 marks. All questions are set at the Class 10 (CBSE) level, so the topics are familiar to most candidates. However, accuracy and speed both matter here because each wrong answer leads to a deduction of 1/3 mark.

RRB Group D Mathematics Syllabus Topics

The following topics are prescribed in the official RRB Group D Mathematics syllabus as notified by the Railway Recruitment Board:

 Topics

Time and Work

Time and Distance

Simple and Compound Interest

Profit and Loss

Algebra

Geometry and Trigonometry

Elementary Statistics

Square Root and Cube Root

Topic-wise Breakdown and What to Study

Number System, LCM and HCF

Questions from this topic test your understanding of natural numbers, whole numbers, integers, rational and irrational numbers. You should be confident with finding the LCM and HCF of two or more numbers using both the prime factorisation method and the division method. Exam questions often combine LCM or HCF with real-life scenarios like arranging objects in rows or tiling floors.

BODMAS, Decimals and Fractions

BODMAS questions check whether you apply the correct order of operations: Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction. Expect simplification problems that mix decimals and fractions. Practice converting between fractions and decimals quickly, as these appear frequently in the paper.

Ratio, Proportion and Percentages

Ratio and Proportion questions are often combined with mixture problems or partnership-type questions. Percentages appear in a wide variety of contexts, including profit and loss, interest calculations, and data interpretation. Build the habit of converting percentages to fractions mentally to save time.

Time and Work, Time and Distance

These are two of the most regularly tested topics in RRB exams. Time and Work questions involve pipes and cisterns as well as individuals or groups completing a task. Time and Distance problems cover relative speed, trains crossing platforms, and average speed. The unitary method is the fastest approach for both.

Simple and Compound Interest

You should be familiar with both the SI and CI formulas. Compound interest questions in Group D typically involve annual compounding for two or three years. Practise finding the difference between CI and SI for the same principal to handle trick questions faster.

Profit and Loss

Questions usually involve finding cost price, selling price, marked price, or discount percentage. Successive discounts and fraudulent weight problems also appear. Remember the shortcut formulas for profit and loss on cost price versus selling price to avoid calculation errors.

Algebra

Algebra at Class 10 level covers linear equations in one or two variables, quadratic equations, and basic identities such as (a+b)^2 and (a-b)^2. Questions often ask you to find the value of an expression given a condition, so quick substitution saves time.

Geometry and Trigonometry

Geometry questions cover properties of triangles, circles, quadrilaterals, and parallel lines. Trigonometry is limited to basic ratios (sin, cos, tan) and standard angle values (0, 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees). Height and distance problems using trigonometric ratios also appear occasionally.

Mensuration

Mensuration covers area and perimeter of 2D figures (triangle, rectangle, circle, trapezium) and volume and surface area of 3D figures (cube, cuboid, cylinder, cone, sphere). Always keep the formulas handy and ensure you use consistent units throughout a problem.

Elementary Statistics

Statistics questions involve mean, median, and mode of a data set. Data Interpretation questions may present data in bar graphs, pie charts, or tabular form, and ask you to calculate averages or compare values. Practice reading charts quickly to score well in this part.

Mathematics Preparation Tips

•        Practise daily calculations mentally to build speed without a calculator, since calculators are not permitted in the CBT.

•        Learn shortcut formulas for percentage, ratio, and interest problems because these appear in almost every exam.

•        Solve previous year RRB Group D papers to understand the exact difficulty level and the type of questions that are asked repeatedly.

•        Focus on accuracy over speed in the early stages of preparation and then work on finishing 25 questions within 20 to 22 minutes.

•        Use the elimination method on multiple-choice questions to rule out clearly wrong options when you are unsure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many maths questions come in RRB Group D?

There are 25 questions from Mathematics, carrying 25 marks in total.

Is the maths syllabus difficult?

All topics are at the Class 10 CBSE level. With regular practice, most students find the section manageable.

Is there negative marking in the maths section?

Yes. One-third (0.33) mark is deducted for each incorrect answer across all sections including Mathematics.
