Candidates are shortlisted for CBT 2 in a ratio of approximately 20 times the total post-wise vacancy, based on CBT 1 scores, subject to availability of eligible candidates.

CBT 1 covers three subjects: Mathematics (30 questions), General Intelligence and Reasoning (30 questions), and General Awareness (40 questions) for a total of 100 questions and 100 marks in 90 minutes. The questions are of Class 10 to graduation level in terms of academic difficulty. The paper is available in English, Hindi, and other scheduled languages as specified in the official notification.

CBT 1 Preparation Tips

Time Management in the Examination Hall

With 100 questions in 90 minutes, you have an average of 54 seconds per question. Develop a section-wise time strategy: attempt Reasoning and Mathematics selectively (focusing on your strongest question types first), and move through General Awareness quickly since these require recall rather than calculation. Avoid spending more than 2 minutes on any single question.

Mock Test Strategy

Attempt at least two full-length CBT 1 mock tests per week in the final two months before the examination. After each mock, spend equal time on error analysis as on the test itself. Track your accuracy and speed per section across multiple tests to identify consistent weak areas.

GA Section Strategy

General Awareness cannot be prepared overnight. Build a habit of reading daily current affairs summaries from at least four months before the examination. For static GK topics such as History, Geography, and Polity, prepare concise one-page notes per topic for rapid revision in the week before the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions: CBT 1

Q1. Is CBT 1 a qualifying examination?

CBT 1 is a screening examination. Its score is used for shortlisting candidates for CBT 2. The CBT 1 score is NOT counted in the final merit list; only the CBT 2 score determines the final ranking.

Q2. Are CBT 1 and CBT 2 conducted on the same day?

No. CBT 1 and CBT 2 are conducted on separate dates. CBT 2 is conducted only for candidates who qualify CBT 1.

Q3. What is the expected CBT 1 cut-off for RRB NTPC 2027?

Cut-off marks vary by RRB zone, category (General/OBC/SC/ST/EWS), and post type. Historically, General category cut-offs for CBT 1 have ranged between 65 and 80 marks (out of 100) depending on the zone and the applicant pool. Candidates should aim for a score well above 75 for a safe shortlisting margin.
