RRB NTPC CBT 2 Syllabus

The RRB NTPC CBT 2 (Computer Based Test Stage 2) is the main examination of the RRB NTPC 2027 recruitment process. Only candidates who qualify CBT 1 are eligible to appear in CBT 2. Unlike CBT 1 (which is common for all NTPC candidates), CBT 2 is conducted separately for Graduate Level Posts and Under-Graduate Level Posts. The CBT 2 score is the primary determinant of the final merit list for most NTPC posts (with the exception of Station Master and Traffic Assistant, where CBAT scores are also factored in).

CBT 2 covers the same three subjects as CBT 1 but with a higher number of questions and greater difficulty: Mathematics (35 questions), General Intelligence and Reasoning (35 questions), and General Awareness (50 questions) for a total of 120 questions and 120 marks in 90 minutes. The questions in CBT 2 are set at a higher difficulty level compared to CBT 1, with more application-based and analytical questions, particularly in Mathematics and Reasoning.

CBT 2 Syllabus: Mathematics (35 Questions)

The CBT 2 Mathematics section builds on the same syllabus as CBT 1 but with increased difficulty, multi-step problems, and a greater proportion of application-based questions. All CBT 1 Mathematics topics apply, with the following additions and increased depth:

•        Advanced Number Theory: LCM and HCF of larger numbers, prime factorisation, divisibility across multiple conditions

•        Advanced Percentage and Partnership: Problems involving multiple percentage changes, partnership with time-weighted capital

•        Mixture and Alligation: Two and three-component alligation problems

•        Pipes and Cisterns: Multiple inlet and outlet pipes, work done in fractional time

•        Boats and Streams: Combined upstream-downstream problems

•        Trains: Problems involving two trains moving in opposite or same directions

•        Advanced Mensuration: Problems involving combinations of 2D and 3D shapes, frustum of a cone

•        Coordinate Geometry: Distance formula, section formula, area of triangle using coordinates, slope of a line

•        Advanced Trigonometry: Trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric values, heights and distances with two angles

•        Data Interpretation: Tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts; calculation-intensive DI sets

•        Probability: Basic probability, complementary events, combined events

•        Permutation and Combination: Arrangements and selections, basic applications

•        Inequalities: Simple algebraic inequalities

CBT 2 Syllabus: General Intelligence and Reasoning (35 Questions)

The CBT 2 Reasoning section is generally of higher complexity than CBT 1, with more complex puzzle sets, multi-step logical deductions, and a greater proportion of non-verbal questions. All CBT 1 Reasoning topics apply, with the following additions:

•        Complex Seating Arrangement: Circular, square, and linear arrangement with multiple conditions and variables

•        Advanced Coding-Decoding: Logic-based coding, pattern-based word encoding

•        Critical Reasoning: Argument evaluation, strengthening and weakening arguments, inference drawing

•        Input-Output: Machine-based word and number rearrangement sequences

•        Alpha-Numeric Series: Mixed series involving letters, numbers, and symbols

•        Logical Deductions: Multi-premise syllogisms, possibility-based conclusions

•        Data Sufficiency: Two-statement data sufficiency questions

•        Statement and Inference: Identifying conclusions that logically follow from statements

•        Non-Verbal Reasoning: Series of figures, matrix completion, mirror image, paper folding and cutting

CBT 2 Syllabus: General Awareness (50 Questions)

The General Awareness section in CBT 2 carries 50 questions and covers a wider range of topics at a somewhat greater depth compared to CBT 1. All CBT 1 GA topics apply, with greater emphasis on the following areas in CBT 2:

•        Indian Railways: In-depth knowledge of railway history, administration, safety systems, major projects (Vande Bharat, KAVACH, dedicated freight corridors), station modernisation, and recent policy developments

•        Economy: Deeper coverage of budget, fiscal deficit, monetary policy, banking regulations, and economic indicators

•        Polity and Constitution: Constitutional amendments, landmark Supreme Court judgments, administrative reforms

•        Science and Technology: ISRO missions, defence developments, renewable energy, biotechnology, AI and digital policy

•        Environment: National parks, biosphere reserves, tiger reserves, climate agreements, pollution control boards

•        International Affairs: Major bilateral and multilateral agreements, international organisations (UN, WTO, IMF, World Bank), summits

•        Static GK: Books and authors, important days and dates, national symbols, state capitals and Chief Ministers

CBT 2 Preparation Tips

1. Prioritise CBT 2 Over CBT 1 in Your Study Plan

Since the CBT 2 score determines the final merit list, direct the majority of your preparation effort towards CBT 2-level mastery. Use CBT 1 preparation as a base and then progressively increase the difficulty of your practice material as you approach the main examination stage.

2. Focus on Data Interpretation for Mathematics

Data Interpretation (DI) questions are a significant and often high-difficulty component of CBT 2 Mathematics. Practise DI sets from tables, bar charts, line graphs, and pie charts daily. The ability to read data quickly and perform calculations accurately under time pressure is a skill that must be built through consistent practice over weeks, not days.

3. Increase Accuracy in the Final Weeks

In the final four weeks before CBT 2, shift your focus from covering new content to maximising accuracy on known topics. Every wrong answer costs you 1.33 marks (1 mark for the wrong answer plus 1/3 mark penalty). In a competitive examination where the cut-off difference between ranks may be fractions of a mark, accuracy is more valuable than attempting maximum questions.

Frequently Asked Questions: CBT 2

Q1. Is the CBT 2 syllabus the same for Graduate and Under-Graduate posts?

The subject areas are the same (Mathematics, Reasoning, and General Awareness), but the difficulty level differs. Graduate level CBT 2 is set at a higher difficulty than Under-Graduate level CBT 2, particularly in Mathematics and Reasoning.

Q2. Is the CBT 2 score visible on the final merit list?

The final merit list is based on the normalised CBT 2 score (normalised across multiple sessions if the examination is conducted in multiple shifts). The RRB publishes the normalisation method in the official notification.

Q3. Can a candidate appear for CBT 2 of multiple post categories?

A candidate who qualifies CBT 1 will appear in CBT 2 for the post categories they applied for. The CBT 2 for Graduate Level Posts and Under-Graduate Level Posts is conducted separately, and a candidate who applied for posts in both categories must appear in both.
