NCERT Book for Class 11 Physics

Physics is one of those subjects that can feel overwhelming at first but becomes incredibly rewarding once you start understanding how the world around you works. For Class 11 students in India, the NCERT Physics textbook is the single most important resource to begin that journey. Whether you are studying for your school exams, preparing for NEET, or building a foundation for JEE, this book is where it all starts.

The NCERT Class 11 Physics textbook is split into two parts, each covering a distinct set of topics. On this page, you can access both parts as PDFs, provided here as study material for students for educational reference.

About the NCERT Class 11 Physics Textbook

Published by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, the NCERT Physics book for Class 11 is the prescribed textbook for CBSE schools and is widely used by many state boards across India. It is also the base reference for major competitive exams like NEET and JEE Main.

What makes this book valuable is its balanced approach. It does not simply list formulas and definitions. Instead, it explains the reasoning behind every concept, connects theory to real-life situations, and gives students enough worked examples and exercises to develop genuine problem-solving skills.

Some key strengths of this textbook:

  • Concepts are built up gradually, starting from fundamentals and moving towards application

  • Every chapter includes detailed examples that walk students through the problem-solving process step by step

  • Diagrams and illustrations make abstract ideas much easier to picture and understand

  • The exercises at the end of each chapter cover a wide range of difficulty levels, from straightforward application questions to more challenging numericals

  • The language is clear and precise, written with Class 11 students in mind

NCERT Class 11 Physics Part 1 - Chapters and Topics

Part 1 of the NCERT Class 11 Physics book covers the mechanics and foundational topics of classical physics. These chapters form the backbone of everything that follows in Class 12 and in competitive exams.

Chapter 1 - Units and Measurements

This chapter lays the groundwork for all of physics. It explains the importance of measurement, introduces the SI system of units, covers significant figures, dimensional analysis, and discusses errors in measurement. Students who build a strong understanding here will find all subsequent chapters much easier.

Chapter 2 - Motion in a Straight Line

An introduction to kinematics, this chapter covers displacement, velocity, acceleration, and the equations of motion for objects moving along a straight path. Graphs of motion are also discussed in detail, which is a very commonly tested topic.

Chapter 3 - Motion in a Plane

This chapter extends kinematics to two dimensions. It introduces vectors, vector addition and subtraction, relative motion, and the concept of projectile motion. Understanding projectile motion well is essential for many JEE and NEET questions.

Chapter 4 - Laws of Motion

One of the most fundamental chapters in all of classical physics. Newton's three laws of motion are explained clearly with their applications. Topics include inertia, momentum, the concept of force, friction, and the application of Newton's laws to everyday situations.

Chapter 5 - Work, Energy and Power

This chapter introduces one of the most important principles in physics: the conservation of energy. Work done by a force, kinetic and potential energy, the work-energy theorem, power, and collisions are all covered here with detailed examples.

Chapter 6 - System of Particles and Rotational Motion

A more advanced chapter that introduces centre of mass, torque, angular momentum, and the dynamics of rotating bodies. This chapter requires careful study as it is both conceptually rich and frequently tested in competitive exams.

Chapter 7 - Gravitation

Explains Newton's universal law of gravitation and its consequences. Topics include gravitational potential energy, escape velocity, orbital motion of satellites, and Kepler's laws of planetary motion. A very important chapter for NEET aspirants.

NCERT Class 11 Physics Part 2 - Chapters and Topics

Part 2 moves into the properties of matter, heat, and wave phenomena. These topics are equally important for both board exams and competitive entrance tests.

Chapter 8 - Mechanical Properties of Solids

Explains how solids behave when external forces are applied. Concepts of stress, strain, elastic moduli including Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus are covered along with applications in everyday engineering contexts.

Chapter 9 - Mechanical Properties of Fluids

Covers the behaviour of liquids and gases under pressure. Topics include Pascal's law, Archimedes' principle, surface tension, viscosity, and Bernoulli's principle. Many numerical problems in NEET come from this chapter.

Chapter 10 - Thermal Properties of Matter

Discusses how materials change with temperature. Thermal expansion, specific heat capacity, calorimetry, heat transfer through conduction, convection, and radiation are all explained with practical examples and applications.

Chapter 11 - Thermodynamics

A conceptually important chapter that deals with the transfer and transformation of energy. The zeroth, first, and second laws of thermodynamics are covered, along with heat engines, refrigerators, and the concept of entropy.

Chapter 12 - Kinetic Theory

Explains the behaviour of gases at the molecular level. The kinetic theory of gases, the ideal gas equation, degrees of freedom, and the equipartition of energy are the key topics. This chapter helps students understand thermodynamics at a deeper level.

Chapter 13 - Oscillations

Introduces simple harmonic motion and its mathematical description. Topics include amplitude, frequency, time period, energy in SHM, damping, and resonance. Oscillations is a chapter that connects very naturally to the study of waves.

Chapter 14 - Waves

The final chapter covers the nature and behaviour of mechanical waves. Wave speed, superposition, standing waves, beats, and the Doppler effect are all explained clearly. This chapter is very important for NEET and also appears regularly in JEE.

Which Chapter Got Removed in the Latest Edition?

The chapter on Physical World, which was Chapter 1 in the older edition of the book, has been removed as part of NCERT's content rationalisation. All other chapters remain. The current latest edition starts directly with Units and Measurements as Chapter 1, followed by the motion chapters.

Why This Book Matters for NEET and JEE

The NCERT Class 11 Physics book is not just a school textbook. It plays a central role in competitive exam preparation for two very important reasons.

First, NEET Physics draws very heavily from NCERT. A large portion of NEET questions are either directly from NCERT examples and exercises, or are very closely based on NCERT concepts. Students who have thoroughly read and practised from the NCERT book are at a significant advantage.

Second, for JEE Main, NCERT forms the conceptual foundation. Many JEE Main questions test whether students truly understand the principles explained in NCERT. While JEE Advanced requires practice beyond NCERT, even for JEE Advanced, students who have deeply understood NCERT Physics tend to develop better physical intuition.

How to Get the Most Out of the NCERT Physics Book

Simply reading the book is not enough. Here is a practical approach that most successful students follow:

  • Read the introductory section of each chapter to understand the context and motivation for the topic

  • Go through every derivation carefully. Do not just memorise them; understand each step

  • After studying the theory, solve every in-chapter example without looking at the solution first

  • Move on to the exercise questions only after you are confident with the examples

  • Make a formula sheet for each chapter as you go. This is very useful during revision

  • For chapters like Rotational Motion and Thermodynamics, draw diagrams while solving problems. It helps significantly

  • After finishing any chapter, revisit the summary at the end to consolidate what you have learnt

Additional Resources That Complement This Book

Once you have covered the NCERT book thoroughly, these resources will help you go further:

  • NCERT Exemplar Problems for Class 11 Physics: These are application-based and more challenging than standard NCERT exercises. Highly recommended for NEET and JEE aspirants

  • Previous Year Question Papers: Solving past NEET and JEE Main papers helps you understand which topics and types of questions appear most frequently

  • Chapter-wise Notes: Concise notes with key formulas and concepts are very useful during the last few weeks before exams

  • Practice Papers: Full-length timed practice tests help you build exam speed and identify weak areas

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1. Is NCERT Physics enough for NEET?

For NEET, the NCERT Physics book is the most important resource and covers the majority of what is tested. Most NEET Physics questions are based directly on NCERT concepts, examples, or exercises. However, you should also practise with previous year NEET papers and the NCERT Exemplar book to be fully prepared.

Q2. Which chapters in Class 11 Physics Part 1 are most important for competitive exams?

Laws of Motion, Work Energy and Power, and Gravitation are particularly important for both NEET and JEE. System of Particles and Rotational Motion is very heavily tested in JEE. For NEET, all chapters carry weightage and none should be skipped.

Q3. How should I approach the numerical problems in this book?

Start by identifying what quantities are given and what needs to be found. Write down the relevant formula or principle. Substitute values step by step and check the units in your final answer. If you get stuck, go back to the concept explanation in the chapter and re-read the worked examples. With consistent practice, numericals become much less intimidating.

Q4. Why is the book split into Part 1 and Part 2?

The NCERT Class 11 Physics book is divided into two parts purely for practical reasons related to the size of the content. Part 1 covers mechanics, and Part 2 covers properties of matter, heat, and waves. Both parts are equally important and together make up the complete Class 11 Physics curriculum.

Q5. I find Rotational Motion very tough. How should I study it?

Rotational Motion is one of the trickiest chapters in Class 11 Physics because it introduces many new quantities like torque, moment of inertia, and angular momentum. The best approach is to study it in stages. First, understand the definitions and the analogies with linear motion. Then work through the examples in the book one by one. Finally, practise a variety of problems. Most students find that once they understand the parallel between linear and rotational motion, the chapter becomes much more manageable.
