SSC CPO English Comprehension Syllabus
English is the subject SSC CPO is actually built around. Fifty questions in Paper 1 and two hundred in Paper 2, which comes to 250 of the 400 marks that decide your rank.
No other subject in this exam comes close. Quantitative Aptitude is 50 marks. Reasoning is 50. General Knowledge is 50. English is five times any one of them.

How the two papers differ
The topic list is the same. The demands are not.
Paper 1 gives you 50 questions in a thirty minute lock. It is a speed test on material you either know or do not, and there is no time to work anything out.
Paper 2 gives you 200 questions in two hours on the same syllabus. Length is the variable. Vocabulary breadth carries the paper, concentration decides the last fifty questions, and no amount of grammar rules substitutes for words you have not met.
How to prepare
Read every day in English, from the start, from material that stretches your vocabulary. Editorial pages of a national newspaper work for this reason.
Keep a running record of words you meet in reading rather than working through a list. Two hundred questions test usage, and words learned in context survive where list learning does not.
Work grammar by error category. The same categories are planted repeatedly across both papers, and recognising the category is faster than reasoning the sentence out.
Do full length Paper 2 practice, not short sets. Two hours on one subject is a stamina exercise as much as a knowledge one, and concentration usually fails somewhere past question 130 in candidates who have never sat the full length.
Learn idioms and phrasal verbs from lists. This is the one part where rote learning genuinely pays, because the same expressions recur.
