SSC JHT Paper 1 Syllabus
Paper 1 is the objective half of the Combined Hindi Translators Examination. Two hundred questions split evenly between Hindi and English, and both halves count towards the 400 mark merit total.
It is a language paper rather than a translation paper. Translation is tested in Paper 2. What Paper 1 tests is whether you have genuine command of both languages separately, which is the foundation the second paper is built on.

General Hindi syllabus
Vyakaran
Sandhi and sandhi viched, samas, upsarg and pratyay, kaarak, ling, vachan, kaal, vachya, along with sangya, sarvnaam, visheshan and kriya.
Shabd gyan
Paryayvachi shabd, vilom shabd, anekarthi shabd, shabd yugm, samshrut and bhinnarthak shabd, plus vaakyansh ke liye ek shabd.
Muhavare aur lokoktiyan
Common idioms and proverbs with their meanings and usage.
Ashuddhi shodhan
Ashuddh vaakya shodhan, vartani shuddhi and vaakya parivartan.
Gadyansh
Comprehension passages with questions on content, meaning and usage.
The section tests command of the language rather than literary history, so grammar and usage carry the weight rather than the study of authors and movements.
General English syllabus
Grammar and error detection
Spotting errors, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, along with direct and indirect narration.
Vocabulary
Synonyms and antonyms, spelling and misspelt words, idioms and phrases, plus one word substitution.
Sentence structure
Fill in the blanks, sentence completion, shuffling of sentence parts and shuffling of sentences in a passage.
Comprehension
Cloze passages and reading comprehension passages.
What level this is set at
Both halves are pitched at the standard of the qualifying master’s degree, which puts them well above the CGL and CHSL English papers.
Precision separates candidates here rather than speed. Two hundred questions in two hours is thirty-six seconds each, but the questions turn on fine distinctions of usage rather than on calculation, so the constraint is knowledge rather than the clock.
How to prepare
Prepare both languages equally. Candidates who are strong in one and comfortable in the other usually lose more marks in the comfortable one than they expect, and the paper gives you nowhere to hide either weakness.
Work Hindi grammar systematically rather than by instinct. Native fluency is not the same as knowing sandhi rules or kaarak classifications, and this paper tests the rules.
Read in both languages daily. A Hindi newspaper and an English one, every day, is the single most effective preparation for a paper built on usage.
Answer selectively. At 0.25 per error on a one mark question, a two option guess is worth taking and a blind guess is roughly neutral.
