SSC CGL Tier 1 Syllabus

Tier 1 does one job. It decides who sits Tier 2. The marks you score here are not carried into the merit list, and a candidate who clears by a single mark starts Tier 2 level with a candidate who topped the shift.

That does not make it easy. Sectional timing changed how the paper works, and the section you are weakest in can no longer be rescued by the section you are strongest in.

Two marks for a correct answer, 0.50 deducted for a wrong one. Objective multiple choice, set in English and Hindi except the English Comprehension section. Candidates eligible for a scribe get 80 minutes.

Where the exam runs across multiple shifts, the Commission normalises marks before publishing results, so your printed score and your normalised score will differ.

What sectional timing changed

Each section locks when its fifteen minutes are gone. Unused time does not carry forward and you cannot return to a closed section.

Twenty-five questions in fifteen minutes is thirty-six seconds a question. For General Awareness that is generous, since you either know a fact or you do not. For Quantitative Aptitude it is tight, and it means the long calculation you would once have saved for the end now simply does not get attempted.

The practical effect is that mock tests taken on the old flexible format are misleading. Practise each section against its own clock from the start.

General Intelligence and Reasoning

Semantic, symbolic and figural analogy. Semantic, symbolic and figural classification. Semantic, number and figural series. Problem solving, word building, coding and decoding, numerical and symbolic operations, trends, space orientation and space visualisation, Venn diagrams, drawing inferences, punched hole and pattern folding and unfolding, figural pattern folding and completion, embedded figures, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and social intelligence.

Both verbal and non-verbal questions appear. Non-verbal reasoning is the part candidates most often under-practise and the part that moves fastest with practice.

General Awareness

India and its neighbouring countries covering history, culture, geography, the economic scene, general polity, the Indian Constitution and scientific research. Current events. Sports, awards, important schemes, important days, books and authors and people in the news.

Fifty marks in fifteen minutes with no calculation involved makes this the highest scoring section per minute in the paper, provided you have read consistently.

Quantitative Aptitude

Whole numbers, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers. Percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work. Algebra covering school level identities, elementary surds and graphs of linear equations. Geometry covering triangles and their centres, congruence and similarity, circles, chords, tangents and angles subtended by chords. Mensuration across plane figures and solids. Trigonometry covering ratios, complementary angles, standard identities and heights and distances. Statistics covering histograms, frequency polygons, bar diagrams and pie charts.

English Comprehension

Understanding of correct English, comprehension and writing ability, tested through spotting errors, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, spelling, idioms and phrases, one word substitution, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passages and comprehension passages.

How to treat Tier 1 in your study plan

Prepare it as the first fifteen minutes of Tier 2, not as a separate syllabus. Every Tier 1 topic reappears in Tier 2 at greater depth, so nothing you learn here is wasted.

Build accuracy before speed. At 0.50 per error, an attempt rate of 90 with 70 per cent accuracy scores worse than an attempt rate of 75 with 90 per cent accuracy.

Fix your section order in practice and keep it. With sectional timing, the order is set by the software, so what you are really rehearsing is how quickly you settle into each new section after the last one closes.
