SSC CGL Tier 2 Paper 2 Statistics Syllabus

Paper 2 applies to one post. If you have applied for Junior Statistical Officer in the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, you sit it. If you have not, you can skip this page entirely.

It is worth understanding what that choice costs and buys. Eligibility for JSO requires statistics at the twelfth standard or graduation level depending on the route, so it is not a preference every candidate can express. For those who can, it opens a post with a smaller applicant pool and its own cut-off.

Objective multiple choice, two marks per correct answer. The marks count towards merit for JSO posts alongside Paper 1.

SSC CGL Statistics syllabus, topic wise

Collection, classification and presentation of statistical data

Primary and secondary data, methods of data collection, tabulation of data, graphs and charts, frequency distributions and diagrammatic presentation of frequency distributions.

Measures of central tendency

Common measures including mean, median and mode, partition values covering quartiles, deciles and percentiles, and the relative merits and demerits of each measure.

Measures of dispersion

Range, quartile deviation, mean deviation and standard deviation, along with measures of relative dispersion.

Moments, skewness and kurtosis

Different types of moments and their relationships, the meaning of skewness and kurtosis and the measures used for each.

Correlation and regression

Scatter diagram, simple correlation coefficient, simple regression lines, Spearman’s rank correlation, measures of association of attributes and multiple regression, multiple and partial correlation for three variables only.

Probability theory

The meaning of probability, the different definitions of probability, conditional probability, compound probability, independent events and Bayes’ theorem.

Random variables and probability distributions

Random variable, probability functions, expectation and variance of a random variable, higher moments of a random variable, along with binomial, Poisson, normal and exponential distributions along with joint distribution of two random variables in the discrete case.

Sampling theory

The concept of population and sample, parameter and statistic, sampling and non-sampling errors, probability and non-probability sampling techniques including simple random sampling with and without replacement, stratified sampling, multistage sampling, multiphase sampling, cluster sampling, systematic sampling, purposive sampling, convenience sampling and quota sampling. Sampling distribution, sample size decisions.

Statistical inference

Point estimation and interval estimation, the properties of a good estimator, methods of estimation including moments, maximum likelihood and least squares. Testing of hypothesis covering the basic concept and general procedure, together with large sample tests.

Analysis of variance

Analysis of one way and two way classified data.

Time series analysis

The components of time series, and the determination of trend by the free hand curve, semi average, moving average and least squares methods.

Index numbers

The meaning of index numbers, problems in the construction of index numbers, types of index number, different formulae, base shifting, splicing and deflating of index numbers, and the uses of index numbers.

How to prepare for Paper 2

The syllabus reads like a first year statistics course, and that is roughly the depth. Questions test whether you can apply a formula correctly under time pressure, not whether you can derive it.

Two hours for 100 questions gives you 72 seconds each, which is comfortable by SSC standards. That means accuracy carries more weight than speed here, and 0.50 per error is unforgiving of formula confusion between closely related measures.

Work through numerical practice by topic rather than by mock test until the standard formulae are automatic. Correlation and regression, probability distributions and index numbers between them account for a large share of the paper in most years.
