SSC CPO Paper 1 Syllabus

Paper 1 is the first stage of SSC CPO and its marks count towards the final merit list. That makes CPO different from CGL and CHSL, where the first paper is discarded once you clear it.

It is also the paper with the tightest clock in the SSC system. Two hundred questions in two hours, split into four sections that each lock after thirty minutes.

One mark per correct answer and 0.25 deducted per wrong answer. Objective multiple choice, set in English and Hindi except the English Comprehension section. Where the exam runs across multiple shifts, marks are normalised.

What thirty minutes per section means

Fifty questions in thirty minutes is thirty-six seconds each. There is no reading time, no settling in and no borrowing from a section you finished early.

For General Knowledge that pace is achievable, because you either know a fact or you do not. For Quantitative Aptitude it removes an entire category of question from play. Any problem that needs two minutes of working is a problem you cannot afford, whatever the answer would have been worth.

The practical consequence is that CPO rewards recognition speed over problem solving depth. Candidates who train on long, multi step questions are training for a different paper.

Section by section

General Intelligence and Reasoning

Analogies, similarities and differences, space visualisation, spatial orientation, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion and syllogistic reasoning. Semantic, symbolic, number and figural analogy and classification also appear, along with problem solving, word building, Venn diagrams, drawing inferences, pattern folding, embedded figures, critical thinking, plus emotional and social intelligence.

General Knowledge and General Awareness

Current events and everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect. India and its neighbouring countries covering history, culture, geography, the economic scene, general polity, the Indian Constitution and scientific research. Questions on Delhi Police and the central police organisations appear regularly.

Quantitative Aptitude

Whole numbers, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers, percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work. Algebra, geometry, mensuration across plane figures and solids, trigonometry with heights and distances, along with statistics through histograms, frequency polygons, bar diagrams and pie charts.

English Comprehension

Understanding of correct English, comprehension and writing ability, tested through error spotting, fill in the blanks, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, sentence improvement, voice and narration, para jumbles, cloze tests and comprehension passages.

How to prepare for the clock

Practise every section against its own thirty minute timer from the beginning. A full two hour mock taken without section locks tells you nothing about how you will perform when Section 1 closes with eight questions unanswered.

Work out your realistic attempt count per section and stop chasing the rest. Fifty questions in thirty minutes with 0.25 negative marking rewards a candidate who attempts 38 accurately over one who attempts 48 badly.

Bank the fast sections. General Knowledge and English can usually be completed inside the time. Quantitative Aptitude usually cannot, and knowing which ten questions to skip is the skill worth building.
