SSC CPO Paper 2 Syllabus

Paper 2 is one subject and 200 marks of it. English Language and Comprehension, 200 questions, two hours, and every mark counts towards the final merit list.

Note where it sits in the sequence. Paper 2 comes after the Physical Efficiency Test and the Physical Standard Test, not before them. Candidates who do not clear the physical stage never sit it, whatever they scored in Paper 1.

One mark per correct answer. There is no sectional timing, because there is only one section. Marks are normalised where the exam runs across multiple shifts.

Two hours for 200 questions is 36 seconds each, the same pace as Paper 1, sustained across a single subject for the full duration.

Error recognition

Spotting grammatical errors in sentences. Subject verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, conjunctions, modifiers and parallelism.

Filling in the blanks

Blanks testing verbs, prepositions, articles and conjunctions, along with vocabulary based blanks.

Vocabulary

Synonyms and antonyms, one word substitution, and words commonly confused with one another.

Spellings

Detecting misspelt words from a set of options.

Grammar and sentence structure

Active and passive voice, direct and indirect narration, sentence improvement and sentence completion.

Phrases and idiomatic use of words

Idioms, phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions with their meanings.

Comprehension

Reading comprehension passages, along with para jumbles and cloze passages.

Why this paper decides CPO

Add the numbers. English is 50 questions in Paper 1 and 200 questions in Paper 2, which is 250 of the 400 merit marks.

A candidate planning their year around quantitative aptitude is planning around 50 of 400. That misreading is the most common structural mistake in CPO preparation, and it is visible in the cut-offs every cycle.

How to prepare for 200 English questions

Vocabulary breadth stops being optional at this length. Two hundred questions cannot be filled with grammar rules alone, and word lists learned in isolation do not survive the paper. Daily reading over months is the only method that reliably works, because it teaches usage rather than definition.

Work grammar by error category rather than by question. The Commission plants the same categories repeatedly, and naming a category is faster than reasoning a sentence out from scratch.

Build stamina deliberately. Two hours on one subject is a different exercise from two hours across four, and concentration usually fails somewhere around question 130 in candidates who have only ever practised in short sets. Do full length papers.

Learn idioms and phrasal verbs from lists. This is the one part of the paper where rote learning works, because the same expressions recur across years.
