SSC Delhi Police Head Constable Computer Proficiency Test Syllabus

The computer proficiency stage has two halves. A typing test and a formatting test in MS Office. Both are qualifying, so neither adds a mark to your rank while failing either ends the attempt.

For Ministerial posts this is the stage the job is actually about. The role is office work built around typing and document handling, and the test exists to check you can do it.

Typing test

Language

Required speed

English

30 words per minute

Hindi

25 words per minute

Tested on a computer, with errors counted against you as well as speed. A candidate typing at 35 words per minute with heavy corrections can still fail a 30 word per minute standard.

You choose your language at the application stage. For Hindi, read the notification carefully on which font and keyboard arrangement will be provided and practise on that one. Candidates who train on one input method and meet another at the centre lose the attempt on a technicality, and it happens every cycle.

Computer formatting test

The formatting test checks working knowledge of the three standard Office applications.

MS Word

Creating and saving documents, fonts and paragraph formatting, alignment, bullets and numbering, tables, headers and footers, page setup, along with printing.

MS Excel

Workbooks and worksheets, entering and formatting data, basic formulae and functions, sorting and filtering, along with simple charts.

MS PowerPoint

Creating slides, layouts, inserting text and images, formatting, transitions and running a slideshow.

The standard is competent office use rather than advanced work. You are being asked to produce a formatted document, a working spreadsheet and a presentable slide deck within a time limit.

How the two halves connect

Both tests run on the same underlying skill, and so does the Computer Fundamentals section of the written paper.

That makes MS Office the single most efficient block of preparation in this recruitment. Learn it properly once and it serves the written test, the formatting test and, through keyboard familiarity, the typing test.

How to prepare

Start typing practice in the first month of your preparation. Twenty minutes a day for six months takes most people comfortably past 30 words per minute. Six weeks does not.

Practise with an accuracy target rather than a speed target. Speed follows accuracy, and a habit of racing and correcting is hard to unlearn once built.

Type the kind of text the test uses. Official and general prose with punctuation, capitals and numbers, since numerals and punctuation are where untrained typists slow down most.

For the formatting test, work on a real machine doing real tasks. Format a multi page document with headers, footers and a table. Build a spreadsheet with formulae and a chart. Make a ten slide deck. An hour of that teaches more than a week of reading about menus.

Practise against a clock. Both halves of this stage are timed, and candidates who know the software but work slowly fail on the same basis as candidates who do not know it.
