SSC JE General Intelligence & Reasoning Syllabus

Fifty marks in Paper 1 on a syllabus that has nothing to do with engineering. For a candidate who has spent three or four years on a technical diploma or degree, this is unfamiliar territory and it is the section most likely to be left until last.

It should not be. Fifty marks out of 500 merit marks, on a short syllabus shared with every other SSC exam, is the cheapest block of preparation in the whole recruitment.

How much time this section deserves

Four to six weeks of light, consistent practice covers it. The question types are few, they repeat almost unchanged across years, and none of them require background knowledge.

Compare that to the branch paper, which needs months. The efficient plan is to work reasoning in short daily sets alongside your technical study rather than blocking out weeks for it later.

Aim to answer these 50 questions in under 25 minutes in the exam. There is no sectional timer in Paper 1, so every minute you save here is a minute the General Engineering section gets.

How to prepare

Work through the nine topic areas one at a time until each is automatic, then move to timed mixed sets.

Sketch non-verbal questions rather than solving them mentally. Series and pattern completion improve quickly once you start drawing the transformation.

Answer anything you can narrow to two options. At 0.25 per error against a one mark question, that guess is strongly in your favour.
