Grammar and error detection
Spotting errors, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, along with direct and indirect narration. Subject verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, conjunctions and modifiers are where the errors are planted.
Vocabulary
Synonyms and antonyms, spelling and detecting misspelt words, idioms and phrases, plus one word substitution.
Sentence structure and usage
Fill in the blanks, sentence completion, shuffling of sentence parts and shuffling of sentences in a passage.
Comprehension
Cloze passages and reading comprehension passages.
Why English matters twice in this exam
The obvious reason is the hundred marks.
The second reason is the skill test. Transcription is not mechanical. You reconstruct a dictated passage from shorthand outlines, and that reconstruction runs on comprehension. A candidate who reads English fluently reads their own notes back faster and guesses correctly at the outlines that came out badly.
So the reading you do for the CBT feeds directly into the stage after it. Very few subjects in the SSC system pay twice like that.
How to prepare
Read every day in English, from material that stretches your vocabulary. Editorial pages of a national newspaper work because they use words you do not already have.
Keep a running record of words you meet in reading rather than working from a list. A hundred questions test usage, and words learned in context survive where list learning does not.
Work grammar by error category. The Commission plants the same categories repeatedly, and naming the category is faster than reasoning the sentence out.
Practise comprehension at full length rather than in single passages. A hundred questions of English in one sitting is a stamina exercise, and concentration is what fails first in candidates who have only practised in short sets.
Learn idioms and one word substitution from lists. This is the one part of the syllabus where rote learning genuinely works.
