What the Commission says about the standard
Questions test current events and matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspect. They cover India and its neighbouring countries, particularly history, culture, geography, the economic scene, general polity, the Constitution and scientific research.
The Commission adds that questions are set for a candidate who has not made a special study of any discipline. Breadth of reading serves this section better than depth in any one subject.

History
Ancient, medieval and modern India. The freedom struggle, major dynasties, important movements, along with well known dates and figures.
Geography
Indian and world physical geography, rivers, mountains, climate, soils, agriculture, minerals, industries and national parks.
Indian polity and the Constitution
The Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, Parliament, the judiciary, constitutional bodies and amendments.
Economic scene
Basic economic concepts, budget and taxation, banking and the Reserve Bank of India, inflation and current government schemes.
General science
Physics, chemistry and biology at school standard, everyday applications, the human body, nutrition and common diseases.
Static general knowledge
Art and culture, festivals, monuments, books and authors, important days, national symbols, sports and organisations with their headquarters.
Current events
Usually the eight to twelve months before the exam. Schemes, appointments, awards, sports, summits and science developments.
How to prepare
Read a daily newspaper from the first week of your preparation. Fifty questions is a quarter of the paper and none of it can be built in the final month.
Anchor static facts to news. A scheme in the news carries its ministry, its constitutional basis and the geography it applies to, and learning them as a group is what makes them hold.
Revise weekly. This is the section where month one leaks away by month six without a review slot.
Answer selectively but not timidly. At 0.25 per error on a one mark question, a two option guess is worth taking.
Finish quickly. Every minute saved here goes to the English section, which needs it.
