SSC CGL English Language & Comprehension Syllabus

English is the single largest module in SSC CGL Tier 2, worth 135 marks on its own. Add the 50 marks in Tier 1 and it accounts for 185 marks across the exam, more than any other subject.

That weighting is the most under-read fact in SSC CGL preparation. Candidates who plan their year around quantitative aptitude are planning around the smaller subject.

Tier 1 deducts 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 deducts a full mark. The paper is set in English only for this section in both tiers.

Grammar and error detection

Spotting errors, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, plus conversion into direct and indirect narration. Subject verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions, conjunctions and modifiers are where the errors are usually planted.

Vocabulary

Synonyms, homonyms and antonyms, spelling and detecting misspelt words, idioms and phrases, and one word substitution.

Vocabulary is the clearest dividing line between the two tiers. Tier 1 stays within common usage. Tier 2 reaches well past it, and no amount of grammar knowledge substitutes for a word you have not met.

Sentence structure and arrangement

Fill in the blanks, shuffling of sentence parts and shuffling of sentences in a passage.

Comprehension

Cloze passages and reading comprehension passages. Tier 2 passages are longer and the questions lean more on inference than on locating a line.

How Tier 1 and Tier 2 differ

Tier 1 gives you 25 questions in 15 minutes, which is a speed test on material you either know or do not.

Tier 2 gives you 45 questions sharing an hour with General Awareness. The vocabulary is harder, the passages are longer and one mark comes off for every error. It is a different exam wearing the same syllabus.

The practical implication is that Tier 1 English can be cleared on school level competence. Tier 2 English cannot.

How to prepare English for SSC CGL

Read daily, in English, from sources that use vocabulary you do not already have. Editorial pages of a national newspaper are the standard recommendation because they work, not because they are interesting.

Keep a running vocabulary record of words you meet rather than working from a list. Words learned in context stick; words learned from a list of five hundred do not, and the Tier 2 paper tests usage rather than definition.

Work grammar by error type. The Commission plants the same categories of error repeatedly, and once you can name the category you spot it faster than you can reason it out.

Practise Tier 2 comprehension against the clock alongside General Awareness. Forty-five English questions and 25 General Awareness questions in one hour means the comprehension passage is what gets sacrificed when the timing goes wrong, and that is 15 to 20 marks.
