SSC CGL General Awareness Syllabus

General Awareness carries 125 marks across the two tiers and takes no calculation time at all. Per minute spent in the exam hall, nothing else in SSC CGL comes close.

The trade is that the preparation happens months earlier. This is the one section you cannot solve in the exam hall, and the one candidates most often postpone.

Where General Awareness sits in the exam

Tier 1 deducts 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 deducts a full mark. In Tier 2 the module shares its hour with the 45 question English module, so answering General Awareness quickly buys you time for comprehension.

SSC CGL General Awareness syllabus, topic wise

History

Ancient, medieval and modern Indian history. The freedom struggle, major dynasties, important battles and reform movements. World history appears occasionally and lightly.

Geography

Physical geography of India and the world, rivers, mountain ranges, soils, climate, agriculture, minerals and industries, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

Polity and the Constitution

The Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, directive principles, the Parliament, the judiciary, constitutional and statutory bodies, amendments and the schedules. Article numbers matter here, particularly in Tier 2.

Economics

Basic economic concepts, budget and taxation, banking and the Reserve Bank of India, inflation, national income, five year plans and their successors, along with current government economic schemes.

General science

Physics, chemistry and biology at school standard, along with everyday applications, human physiology, nutrition and diseases.

Static general knowledge

Art and culture, dances, festivals, monuments, books and authors, important days, national symbols, first and largest and longest facts, plus organisations with their headquarters.

Current affairs

Typically the eight to twelve months before the exam. Government schemes, appointments, awards and honours, sports, summits and conferences, defence exercises, science and technology developments and obituaries.

How Tier 1 and Tier 2 differ

Tier 1 asks whether you recognise something. Tier 2 asks whether you know it precisely.

A Tier 1 question might ask which ministry runs a scheme. The Tier 2 version asks the year it was launched, the article it draws on or the specific target it set. The same reading covers both, but the notes you make for Tier 2 need dates, numbers and attributions that Tier 1 lets you skip.

How to prepare General Awareness

Read one daily newspaper and one monthly current affairs compilation, consistently, from the start. There is no version of this section that can be crammed.

Build static topics around the news rather than separately. A scheme in the news gives you the ministry, the constitutional provision behind it and the geography it applies to, and learning them together is what makes them stick.

Revise on a schedule. General Awareness is the only section where what you learned in month one leaks away by month six unless you go back to it, and a weekly revision slot is worth more than new material.

Track your accuracy separately in mocks. A candidate attempting 22 of 25 with 60 per cent accuracy is scoring worse than one attempting 15 with 90 per cent, and the negative marking in Tier 2 makes that gap wider.
