SSC CHSL English Language Syllabus

English is the largest module in CHSL Tier 2 at 40 questions and 120 marks. Add the 50 marks in Tier 1 and it comes to 170 marks across the exam, more than any other subject.

Most CHSL preparation plans do not reflect that. Quantitative Aptitude usually gets the hours and English gets the leftovers, which is the wrong way round for this exam.

Tier 1 deducts 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 deducts a full mark. The section is set in English only in both tiers.

Grammar and error detection

Spot the error, improvement of sentences, active and passive voice, plus conversion into direct and indirect narration. Subject verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions and modifiers are where the planted errors sit.

Vocabulary

Synonyms and antonyms, spelling and detecting misspelt words, idioms and phrases, and one word substitution.

Vocabulary is the clearest separator between the tiers. Tier 1 stays inside common usage. Tier 2 reaches past it, and grammar knowledge does not substitute for a word you have not met.

Sentence structure and arrangement

Fill in the blanks, shuffling of sentence parts and shuffling of sentences in a passage.

Comprehension

Cloze passages and reading comprehension passages. Tier 2 passages run longer and lean more on inference than on locating a line.

How the two tiers differ

Tier 1 gives you 25 questions in a free 60 minute paper. It rewards school level competence and speed.

Tier 2 gives you 40 questions sharing an hour with 20 General Awareness questions, with harder vocabulary and a full mark deducted per error. It is a different standard behind the same topic list.

How to prepare

Read in English every day, from material that uses words you do not already have. Editorial pages work because they stretch vocabulary, not because they are enjoyable.

Record words you meet in reading rather than working through a list. The paper tests usage, and words learned in context survive; words learned from a list of five hundred do not.

Work grammar by error category. The same categories are planted repeatedly, and naming the category is faster than reasoning the sentence out.

Practise Tier 2 comprehension on the shared clock with General Awareness. When the timing goes wrong in Section 2, the comprehension passage is what gets abandoned, and that is 12 to 18 marks.
