SSC CHSL General Awareness Syllabus
General Awareness carries 110 marks across the CHSL tiers and needs no calculation at all. In a paper where time pressure decides outcomes, a section you can answer in ten seconds a question is worth more than its marks suggest.
The catch is that it is the only section that cannot be improved in the exam hall. What you know on the day is what you scored.

History
Ancient, medieval and modern India. The freedom struggle, major dynasties, important battles, social and religious reform movements.
Geography
Physical geography of India and the world, rivers, mountains, climate, soils, agriculture, minerals, industries and national parks.
Polity and the Constitution
The Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, directive principles, Parliament, the judiciary, constitutional bodies and amendments.
Economics
Basic concepts, budget and taxation, banking and the Reserve Bank of India, inflation, national income and current government economic schemes.
General science
Physics, chemistry and biology at school standard, with everyday applications, human physiology, nutrition and common diseases.
Static general knowledge
Art and culture, dances, festivals, monuments, books and authors, important days, national symbols and organisations with their headquarters.
Current affairs
Usually the eight to twelve months before the exam, covering schemes, appointments, awards, sports, summits and science and technology developments.
The Commission’s own wording is worth keeping in mind. Questions test awareness of the environment around the candidate and its application to society, at a standard that does not require specialised study of any discipline.
How the two tiers differ
Tier 1 tests recognition. Tier 2 tests precision, and with a full mark deducted per error, a half-remembered fact costs more than leaving the question.
The same reading serves both. What changes is the note-taking. For Tier 2 you need the year, the ministry, the article number or the figure alongside the name.
How to prepare
Read one newspaper daily and one monthly compilation, from the start. There is no compressed version of this section.
Anchor static topics to current news. A scheme in the news brings its ministry, its constitutional basis and the geography it applies to with it, and learning them as a group is what makes them hold.
Revise weekly. This is the one section where month one leaks away by month six without deliberate review.
