SSC CHSL Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus

Quantitative Aptitude carries 140 marks across the CHSL tiers and absorbs more preparation hours than anything else in the exam. It is set at higher secondary standard, which means the topics are familiar and the speed expected is not.

Tier 1 deducts 0.50 per wrong answer. Tier 2 deducts a full mark, and the module shares its hour with 30 reasoning questions.

Number system

Computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, LCM and HCF, divisibility and remainders.

Arithmetic

Percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, simple and compound interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership business, mixture and alligation, time and distance, plus time and work.

Arithmetic is the largest block in Tier 1 and stays substantial in Tier 2.

Algebra

Basic algebraic identities of school algebra, elementary surds and graphs of linear equations.

Geometry

Triangles and their centres, congruence and similarity of triangles, circles and their chords, tangents and angles subtended by chords.

Mensuration

Triangles, quadrilaterals, regular polygons and circles. Tier 2 extends into solids including prisms, cones, cylinders, spheres, hemispheres and pyramids.

Trigonometry

Trigonometric ratios, complementary angles, standard identities, plus heights and distances.

Data interpretation and statistics

Tables and graphs, histograms, frequency polygons, bar diagrams and pie charts. Tier 2 adds measures of central tendency, standard deviation and simple probability.

Where the marks are

Arithmetic carries the largest single share in both tiers. Geometry, mensuration and trigonometry together make up the block usually described as advanced maths, and they are what separate scores in Tier 2.

Data interpretation is worth a small but reliable set of marks in every shift and takes less preparation than its return suggests.

How to prepare

Get the standard formulae automatic before doing any speed work. Most of the time lost in this section goes on rebuilding something that should be instant.

Then build calculation speed deliberately. Squares to thirty, cubes to twenty and fraction to percentage conversions do more for a timed paper than any advanced technique.

For Tier 2, always practise the maths module against the shared clock with reasoning. Practising it alone rehearses the wrong skill.

Keep an error log by topic. Candidates usually lose marks in the same three or four places repeatedly, and identifying them is quicker than grinding through more questions.
