Elements of a computer and its organisation
Input and output devices, the central processing unit, primary and secondary memory, storage devices, ports and the basic block diagram of a computer.
Word processing
Creating, saving, formatting and printing documents. Fonts, paragraphs, tables, spell check, along with common keyboard shortcuts.
Spreadsheets
Workbooks and worksheets, cells and ranges, basic formulae and functions, sorting, filtering and simple charts.
Presentation software
Slides and layouts, inserting text and images, transitions and running a slideshow.
Operating systems and file management
Windows basics, the desktop and taskbar, files and folders, copying, moving and deleting, along with the recycle bin.
Internet and communication
Web browsing and searching, URLs and websites, downloading and uploading, email basics, along with social media awareness.
Basic cyber safety
Viruses, malware and phishing, passwords and safe practices, along with common cyber threats and how to avoid them.
Why this is the cheapest section in the paper
Ten marks on a closed list of topics you can cover in a fortnight, in an exam where the cut-off is often decided by three or four marks.
There is no depth to it. No programming, no networking theory beyond the basics, no hardware detail past the standard block diagram. The questions are factual and the answers are memorable.
Compare that to the numerical ability section, which is worth fifteen marks and takes months to build if you are starting weak. Computer Fundamentals is the better return by a wide margin and almost nobody treats it that way.
How to prepare
Two weeks of focused reading covers it. Work through the seven topic areas in order and make a one page summary of each.
Learn the specifics rather than relying on general familiarity. Keyboard shortcuts, port types, memory units and the difference between a virus, a worm and phishing are precise facts, and everyday computer use does not supply them.
Practise on a real machine if you have access to one. Ten minutes inside Word and Excel doing actual formatting teaches you more than an hour of reading about them.
Answer all ten if you have prepared. At 0.25 per error on questions this factual, there is no reason to leave any blank.
