Syllabus, topic wise
Current events
National and international events from roughly the twelve months before the exam. Government schemes, appointments, awards, summits, defence developments, sports results and science and technology news.
Indian history
Ancient, medieval and modern India. The freedom struggle, major dynasties, important movements, along with well known dates and figures.
Geography
Indian and world physical geography, rivers, mountains, states and capitals, climate, agriculture and national parks.
Indian polity and the Constitution
The Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, Parliament, the President and Prime Minister, the judiciary, states and union territories, along with constitutional bodies.
Economics
Basic economic concepts, banking, budget, taxation, inflation and current government schemes.
General science
Physics, chemistry and biology at school standard, everyday applications, the human body, nutrition and common diseases.
Static general knowledge
Books and authors, awards and honours, important days, national symbols, monuments, festivals, dances, sports terms and organisations with their headquarters.
The Delhi questions
Questions about Delhi itself appear regularly. Its administration, its geography, its monuments, the structure of Delhi Police and recent policing developments in the city.
This is a small, learnable block that almost no candidate prepares deliberately, and in a section worth fifty marks it is worth several of them. A few hours reading about the force and the city you are applying to serve is better value than another week of general current affairs.
How to prepare
Read a daily newspaper from the first week of your preparation. Fifty questions cannot be built in the final month and this section alone usually decides who clears the cut-off.
Anchor static facts to news. A scheme in the news brings its ministry, the constitutional provision behind it and the geography it applies to.
Revise weekly. What you learn in month one leaks away by month six without a review slot.
Answer anything you can narrow down. At 0.25 per error on a one mark question, a two option guess is worth taking and a blind four option guess is roughly neutral.
Minimum qualifying marks
Thirty-five per cent for unreserved candidates, thirty per cent for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates and twenty-five per cent for ex-servicemen. Those thresholds apply to the paper as a whole rather than to this section alone.
