Twenty questions and forty marks on a syllabus the Commission itself calls elementary. The name is accurate. This is arithmetic and basic geometry at Class 10 standard, and the difficulty lies in the clock rather than the content.

No sectional timing, which means maths competes directly with the other three sections for the shared sixty minutes. It is the slowest section per question, so it is the one most likely to eat time the others needed.

Computation of whole numbers, decimals and fractions, relationships between numbers, LCM and HCF.
Fundamental arithmetical operations
The basic operations, order of operations and simplification.
Percentage
Percentage change, increase and decrease, plus applications in other topics.
Ratio and proportion
Simple and compound ratio, division in a given ratio, plus proportion.
Averages
Simple averages, weighted averages and average change problems.
Interest
Simple and compound interest.
Profit and loss
Cost price, selling price, profit and loss percentage.
Discount
Marked price, discount and successive discounts.
Mensuration
Area and perimeter of squares, rectangles, triangles and circles, along with the volume and surface area of basic solids.
Time and distance
Speed, distance and time, relative speed, trains, plus boats and streams.
Ratio and time, and time and work
Work done by individuals and groups, plus problems combining ratio with time.
What is not asked
The syllabus stops well short of the higher secondary papers, which is worth knowing if you are preparing from CHSL or CGL material.
No trigonometry. No coordinate geometry. No algebra beyond basic arithmetic manipulation. No statistics or probability. No data interpretation of the multi chart kind that appears in the graduate papers.
How to prepare
Build the five highest yield topics first. Percentage, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, average and time and work between them account for most of the section in a typical shift.
Then build calculation speed. Squares to twenty-five, tables to twenty and fraction to percentage conversions save more time in a sixty minute paper than any clever method.
Practise this section against a fixed personal time budget, around fifteen to eighteen minutes of the hour. Without a sectional timer, the discipline has to come from you, and maths is where candidates most often lose track of the clock.
Answer anything you can narrow to two options. At 0.25 per error the odds favour it.
