SSC GD Constable English & Hindi Syllabus
The fourth section of the SSC GD paper is a choice. English or Hindi, selected at the application stage, twenty questions either way. You answer one and not both.
The choice is separate from the language you pick for the rest of the paper. A candidate sitting the reasoning, general knowledge and mathematics sections in Bengali still chooses English or Hindi here.

English syllabus, topic wise
Grammar and error detection
Spot the error, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, plus narration. Subject verb agreement, tenses, articles and prepositions are the usual planted errors.
Vocabulary
Synonyms and antonyms, spelling and misspelt words, idioms and phrases, and one word substitution. Everyday usage rather than literary vocabulary.
Fill in the blanks
Single blanks testing prepositions, articles, conjunctions and simple vocabulary.
Comprehension
A short passage with direct questions. Answers are generally located in the text rather than inferred.

Vyakaran
Sandhi, samas, upsarg and pratyay, kaarak, ling, vachan, kaal and vachya, at school level.
Shabd gyan
Paryayvachi and vilom shabd, anekarthi shabd, shabd yugm and vaakyansh ke liye ek shabd.

Common idioms and proverbs with their meanings.
Ashuddhi shodhan
Spotting and correcting errors in sentences, plus vaakya parivartan.

How to choose between them
Choose the language you actually read in, not the one you think looks better. Both options carry the same forty marks and the same difficulty level, and the Commission does not weight one against the other.
The practical test is simple. Which language do you read a newspaper in without effort? That is the one where you will answer twenty questions in eight minutes rather than fifteen.
The choice is made in the application form and cannot be changed later, so decide before you apply rather than after.
How to prepare
Whichever language you pick, start with grammar rules rather than vocabulary. Error spotting, sentence correction and fill in the blanks run on a small set of rules and together they make up a large share of the section.
Learn idioms and proverbs from lists. This is one of the few areas where rote learning genuinely works, because the same expressions recur across years.
Read the comprehension passage once, carefully. At this level the answers are in the text and a single close reading beats two rushed ones.
Answer anything you can narrow to two options. At 0.25 per error, that guess is worth taking.
